The WORLD Pro Tour Stage 8 Winner

Well…Where do I start?

Let’s start with the WDF Hong Kong Open…I played the doubles with my friend Scott Mackenzie, he lives there in Hong Kong. Scott has represented the area in the PDC World Championships and will so again this year so he is a solid player. The tournament was well attended by a high level of players as the final stage of the WORLD pro soft tip tour was on Sunday so it was full of international players. I was not sure what to expect from myself as been about a month since I had played but was doing well in my practice sessions at home. Well my first shot of the day was a 180 followed by a one dart double to win the first leg so all my doubts were erased right off the bat. We rolled along nicely to the semi finals before we ran into our first mis-step missing our chance to win the match but I was extremely happy with how I had played overall on the day and a big thanks to Scott for asking me to play the event.

So now for Stage 8 of the WORLD… and the winner was….

Well lets start a little farther back ;) I was playing the team event in the Hong Kong Open on Saturday and we had finished the round robin portion at about 515pm and the seeding rounds of the WORLD were to be held at 6-9pm. SO we jumped in cab to rush over to the iDarts Club to get seeded for Sunday then rush back hopefully before they started the knockout rounds at the steel event. Normally the trip would only take 15 mins each way and they were giving us a hour to get back to play so no worries right? Well, if you ever been to Hong Kong on a Saturday night you know the streets are stuffed full of people so our “15 min trip” turned in to 48 mins…uh oh. So we run in and sign up asking to be up as soon as possible so we could get back. I managed to squeak out a really great score and left the iDarts thinking I may end up seeded number 1 and win the bonus money. Well we ran out and grabbed a cab back to the Steel tip venue walking in just as they started calling the event. Whew…well we ended up being dumped by the Philippine team headed by guest player Paul Lim in the quarter finals. If you have yet to play TEAM ONE from the Philippines? Well let me tell you that these 4 guys are a threat to win wherever they go, either singles or as a team. Once back at the hotel…thanks to face book I found out I had ended up getting the #1 spot for Sunday.

I woke up Sunday feeling fully rested as I had arrived in Hong Kong early and finally got a full 8 hrs sleep. The 15hr time change is hard to adjust to but with the help of some Ambian I managed a night of sleep. I laid there and said to my friend Scotty Burnett “ I feel good, I may just need to win today” We laughed as we say that every time but obviously at this level it doesn’t happen that often.

Stage 8 was the strongest field yet as everyone was here as it was the last chance to get into the ESPN TV Finals and a shot at the first prize of 1,000,000 HK dollar event plus the following week was the IDF World Cup here in Shanghai China. So you get to combine two major events in one trip making the long flight easier to take. People don’t realize that it takes me 23hrs of traveling to get here from where I live. We warmed up in our room as we normally do before heading over to the iDarts club where the event was held as its hard to get on a board. I went over to the venue by a new form of transport… a ferry. Two friends had come down from Canada Trish Grziesk and Jayson Barlow (to play on Team Canada along with myself and Chris White) and said “let’s take the ferry across instead of a cab” as we were staying across the Bay on Hong Kong Island. I am glad we did as it started the day with a little fun and adventure as we had to fumble our way through the streets to find the venue but the ferry was cool.

We walk in and I see that someone has dropped out of the 128 player field giving me a bye. From previous experience I know instead of playing my first match at 2pm it would not happen to about 430p and since it was only 1p I went and planted my butt in the crowd seats to watch for a few hours before warming up. Well when it was finally my turn to start I found I had the same smooth form from the previous days and went smoothly up to the top 8 where I met my friend and doubles partner from Friday Scott Mackenzie. Well it turned out to be a battle and one that honestly I should have came up on the wrong side of. I always say you need a little luck to win a big event and I definitely had it as Scott had me dead to rights but missed his shot leaving me to get a surprising victory over him. Well I used that opportunity to its fullest and won Stage 8!!! I was very happy with my game on the day and was able to overcome some extremely talented players so feel very lucky to finish off the tour with a win going into Shanghai on a high!

Hopefully this week will continue to roll the way the last few days has and be one of my best trips ever!!! Two big singles events this week capped off by playing for Canada on Saturday so here’s hoping!!!

Stayed tuned…and usually I am updating on Facebook but you are not allowed access to it here in Mainland China so I will be blogging every few days.  I wrote about Shanghai in the past but man I was not kidding then when I said this is the LOUDEST city in the world....All you hear is horns blarring off ALL THE TIME...I swear, the cars must be able to speak to each other here!! LOL
